Luigi Sarno
Cantina del Barone
Cantina del Barone is a small family-run winery on the outskirts of Avellino, in the Campania region, in one of the most vocated areas for the production of Fiano. The winery is led by winemaker Luigi Sarno, who is oriented toward a distinctive and traditional style, capable of researching and enhancing all the specificities that the terroir can offer.
Cantina del Barone's small vineyard property is located on a hillock at an altitude of 350 meters and consists of two small plots, separated by a beaten earth road: 2 hectares from which the grapes for Fiano Paòne are obtained and another half hectare in the Particella 928 cru, replanted by Luigi according to an ideal exposure. The vineyards also include century-old, ungrafted vines rooted on soil of volcanic origin, very rich in minerals and skeleton. The vines are guyot trained and cultivated in accordance with organic farming.
Cantina del Barone produces two labels of Fiano, for a total of only 16,000 bottles a year: the Fiano Paòne and the Fiano Particella 928. These are very typical and strictly territorial oenological expressions that, without lingering on the more canonical and predictable Fiano scents, give intense, unprecedented and original sensations proper to the terroir of origin. The vegetal and smoky stamp is the hallmark of Cantine del Barone's wines, a unique and unconventional brand that impeccably summarizes the particularities of the Irpinia sub-region.
Selection
Particella 928
Cantina del Barone's Fiano "Particella 928" is the result of the experience of Luigi Sarno, a sublime producer of white wines, who marked a deep furrow in the family tradition of Campania vigneron through the creation of a new product that would best express territoriality. In 2001, "Particella 928" was selected within the Fiano vineyard, which was replanted with a new planting sixth and a different orientation of the rows to better irradiate all the vines planted on the mineral-rich, south-facing volcanic soil.
Since 2009, Fiano "Particella 928" has been made from grapes vinified separately: the grapes are pressed softly with the presence of the stalks, which remain in contact with the must to release additional phenolic substances, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and the must bloom remains on the fine lees from 8 to 16 months, depending on the vintage, demonstrating that Sarno cares about his wine and takes care of it from the very first moment, evaluating the various nuances it can take on over time. Once bottled, the wine ages for four months.
Fiano "Particella 928" shines a bright, deep straw yellow. On the nose there are characteristic slightly smoky sensations of yellow citrus, medlar and orange blossom. The palate is vertical, pleasantly savory, continually recalling the sip, full and with a pleasant, long finish. A unique wine, which on drinking immediately puts one at ease and is never the same. A true emotion given by Irpinia.
