Stefano Amerighi
Over the years, Tuscan winemaker Stefano Amerighi has established himself as one of Italy's foremost interpreters of Syrah, while also becoming one of Italy's most renowned wine producers.
Stefano founded his winery in 2002, maturing over the years with the precise aim of producing excellent Syrah using artisanal methods and techniques, employing biodynamic agriculture. He identified the area of Poggiobello di Farneta, in the commune of Cortona, as the ideal place to realize his dream, planting Syrah vines selected from the best clones in the Rhône Valley. Thanks to the experience gained in the field, Stefano Amerighi's winery can now be considered a veritable laboratory for agricultural sustainability.
Stefano Amerighi's estate comprises just over 8 hectares of vineyards dedicated to Syrah, which benefits from southern and south-western exposure and is cultivated according to the precepts of certified organic and biodynamic agriculture. To this end, only low doses of copper and sulfur are used for defence against phytopathogenic agents, biodynamic preparations are used to stimulate soil and plant vitality, and agronomic operations are carried out according to lunar and planetary phases. The same sustainable approach is adopted in the cellar, where the use of oenological aids and additives is strictly excluded. Processing practices involve the destemming of bunches of grapes, harvested entirely by hand, which are then partly delicately pressed with the feet and partly left whole, with subsequent alcoholic fermentation taking place in cement through the action of indigenous yeasts alone, without temperature control. Once the fermentation processes are complete, the masses spend around 14 months aging in wooden barrels and cement vats, and are finally bottled without undergoing any filtration or stabilization. Stefano also uses terracotta amphorae in the winemaking process.
Stefano Amerighi is therefore synonymous with Syrah, a black grape variety that the producer offers in different versions, from rosé to reds of exceptional depth and character that nod to the great Rhône wines. Among these, the Syrah "Apice", an elegant and energetic label produced only in the best vintages, undoubtedly stands out.
Selection
Syrah
Stefano Amerighi's Syrah is a deep, complex red, and the absolute benchmark for Syrah in Italy.
Cortona winemaker Stefano Amerighi is a name for which introductions are even superfluous, although this acquired status results from constant work aimed at continuous improvement. Add to this the fact that Cortona, thanks to its soil and climate conditions, is probably where Syrah can realize its full expressive potential to the point of being comparable to the Rhône masters, and the game is up.
Amerighi Syrah is a pure expression of the grape variety of the same name, obtained from grapes grown biodynamically in Cortona.
Syrah appears in the glass with an intense, impenetrable ruby-red color. The nose is kaleidoscopic, with notes of black pepper, tobacco, blueberry and graphite, all expressed progressively and coherently. The sip is intense, rhythmic and savory, with a caressing yet never indulgent tactility. It brings the balance that distinguishes exceptional and enduring wines capable of enduring and improving over time.
