Marco Sferlazzo

Porta del Vento

Porta del Vento is one of Sicily's most interesting wine estates: a winery caressed by the wind all year round, situated at an altitude of around six hundred meters, straddling the Alcamo and Monreale DOCs. In just a few years, Marco Sferlazzo has successfully transformed the vineyards in this valley on the Camporeale hills, converting them to a certified organic farming system.

Porta del Vento, located in a beautiful valley in the Camporeale region, at around 600 meters above sea level. The estate extends over 18 hectares, 14 planted with vines, on sandy soil resting on a sandstone substratum. Wide temperature fluctuations and the constant presence of wind characterize the climate. The vines are trained in bushes (alberello) on steep slopes with northerly exposure.

Porta del Vento's vineyards lie on sandstone formations rich in sand and clay, with high mineral content. The vineyards, up to 45 years old, are all bush-grown and face north, following the steep slopes of the land. In the vineyards, biodynamic preparations and green manures are used for fertilization, and yields per hectare are always very low, with strictly manual harvesting.

The Porta del Vento range of wines is characterized by finesse and personality, expressing the terroir and soul of the vineyard. Work in the cellar is discreet, aimed at letting the qualities of the grapes harvested in the vineyard express themselves. Catarratto wines are distinguished by their expressiveness and territoriality, particularly the Saray version, which is distinguished by fermentation on the skins for 30 days. These are hand-made wines that surprise with every sip: the strength and lightness of the wind in every bottle.

The grapes are harvested by hand, with a yield of 70 quintals per hectare. The winemaking process includes an alcoholic fermentation phase activated by indigenous yeasts, with a brief maceration of the must in contact with the skins. Aging took place for 4 months in cement on the noble lees and a further 4 months in bottle.
